The Whole School Wellbeing research project, funded by a SSHRC Insight Grant, focusses on sustainable wellbeing in school communities. We examine wellbeing in schools, paying attention to diverse ways of supporting and promoting whole-school wellbeing. By gathering diverse perspectives from students, parents, teachers, and administrators, we are learning what makes school communities thrive. Our research provides examples and approaches that attend to each school community’s unique needs, purposes, and dreams, moving away from one-size-fits-all strategies.

Community Engagement

We recognize that wellbeing is not a “one-size-fits-all” concept. Our research involves diverse examples of school organization from community-responsive approaches. We have identified schools in Canada and the USA that exemplify community-responsive school design. Each school serves as a case study, inviting all school community members to share their experiences through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and other activities. By collecting stories and insights directly from students, parents, teachers, and staff, we aim to understand the unique needs and strengths of each school community.

Knowledge Sharing

Our findings provide examples of whole-school wellbeing grown within the community, offering sustainable alternatives to traditional intervention approaches. We share research findings through conference presentations, book chapters, journal articles, and other media. Additionally, we host Knowledge Sharing Events to engage broader school communities in conversations about wellbeing. Check out our Lead Well resources.

A Note from Prof. Sabre Cherkowski

Hello and welcome! I’m thrilled to share our journey towards encouraging wellbeing in schools. Our project is driven by a passion for creating environments where every student, educator, and staff member feels valued and supported.

As someone who has spent years researching and working in education, I understand the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and connection within school communities. This project is not just about research; it’s about making a real difference in the lives of those who make up our schools. We aim to listen to and learn from the unique experiences of students, parents, teachers, and staff to learn about wellbeing approaches that truly resonate with each community.

I invite you to join us in this exciting endeavor. Your insights, experiences, and support are invaluable as we work together to build thriving school communities. Let’s create a future where everyone can flourish.
